This series of short stories with a distinctly Caribbean flavor, explores aspects of life in a family in Trinidad in the 1960s. It recounts delightfully funny, poignant, inspiring, nostalgic events about the people in the family’s intimate circle as well as those on the periphery of their lives.
The foundation of the book rests on the family’s relationships and values, but reaches beyond to draw attention to the superficial values imposed by colonialism and the inculcation of these values by persons to whom they were not relevant.
This book bears a similarity to Miguel Street, (one of the earlier works of the prolific Trinidad born VS Naipaul) which is also a collection of stories about the simple but colorful lives of characters on a street in Port of Spain albeit at an earlier time (around 1940). Also in both books, the stories are narrated by young children who mature during the narration of the stories.
The stories evoke nostalgia in readers of similar backgrounds and pique the interest of others. Readers will find that the stories strike responsive chords at many junctures, as they identify with the experiences even if nuanced by personal variations. While the stories are enormously funny, the relevance of the narratives as historical and socio-cultural document cannot be ignored and is all the more sharpened in light of the obliteration of some of the values described in the book in today’s denizens of the very locales referenced.

A colorful collection of short stories illustrated by the author's vibrant writing style. The writer's distinctive use of prose reveals each character's temperament and behavior. From Guerin-Cameron's vantage point, you are introduced to quirky individuals and their idiosyncrasies that evoke curiosity and laughter.
Brilliant ! Apparently a portion of the sale goes to charity as well. One does not need this fact to feel good about buying this book. Upon reading it you are taken through a variety of emotions . The author makes you laugh ... , cry and then cry laughing. One can read the book and enjoy it simply on an emotional level. Yet the author, by using a childs voice as narrator is able to touch upon several different issues and raise several socioeconomic dynamics in a completely non judgemental way. Unlike anything I have ever read.
This book if filled with such poignant memories of what might have passed for an "ordinary" existence in the hands of a less-skilled writer. Here is a vivid memoir filled with well-chosen stories of a large, close-knit family in Trinidad. The personalities and places are unique but recognizable by anyone familiar with the flavor of home-grown Trinis and an island ambiance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who, like me, is reluctant to allow a good read to come to an end.
This book had me laughing out loud at some of the predicaments of the characters. Conversely, some stories had me feeling nostalgic for a time I never knew.... L. Cameron's writing is so descriptive that it transported me to that time, that country, that era. I found myself prolonging the experience by only allowing myself to read a story every few days! L. Cameron recounts every day life with a flair, that in some palpable way I believe we can all identify with. I found myself wishing she had continued some stories "just a bit more" so that I could know what happened to the story's protagonist. To me that is the hallmark of a great short story - when you are hoping the author had chosen to write just "one paragraph more". Kudos to Cameron - And Then We Laughed is a must read for those who cherish the short story literary form!
